What to do if an online vendor scams you in Nigeria

Maybe you found the vendor on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or WhatsApp. You transferred money, expected your item or service, and something went wrong. The first thing is to preserve the information you still have.

Do not delete the chats

Keep your Instagram DMs, WhatsApp messages, SMS messages, emails and any other conversation with the vendor.

Take screenshots where useful, especially messages showing what you ordered, the agreed price, payment instructions, delivery promises and any refund discussion.

Keep your transfer receipt

If you paid by bank transfer, save the receipt and the receiving account details. Note the amount, date, bank, account name and account number if you still have them.

Save the vendor page

Keep the Instagram username, TikTok username, Facebook page, WhatsApp number, website or any other identifier you used.

If you can, screenshot the vendor page as it currently appears. Online pages can later change usernames or remove posts.

Put the timeline together

Write down what happened while it is still fresh. When did you contact the vendor? What did you order? When did you transfer the money? What delivery date were you given? What happened afterwards?

If they said a dispatch rider was coming, promised to resend an item or promised a refund, include those details.

Report the transaction

You can document the vendor and what happened through B4YouSend. You do not need to have every possible screenshot or document before submitting a report.
